The department of drilling engineering is one of most important departments in the school of petroleum engineering of China University of Petroleum. Its precedessor is the drilling engineering teaching and research group set up in 1953, it was renamed as the department of drilling engineering in 2005. The department plays an important role in the oil and well engineering discipline, a national key discipline. The research fields focus on rock mechanics, fluid mechanics in oil and gas wells, drillstring mechanics, downhole process control, drilling and completion fluid, and cementing and completion. The department has undertaken more than 130 projects of national and provincial levels in the past few years, which won 2 first prizes of national science and technology progress, 20 prizes of provincial level and 50 prizes of company level.
